When Looking for a Web Designer

Keep control of your own domain name. Never allow anyone (especially designers) to register your domain under their name. You should always have control of your domain. Without control, you can lose access to your website and your email.

Many times I've had to sort through a mess where someone had a friend create a website for them and then register a domain in their name and not yours. If things go sour in your relationship, that "friend" owns your domain and could hold the domain hostage for one reason or another.

When registering your domain, be sure you keep all the passwords and PINs. I highly recommend spending the extra $8 a year on a private registration.

When designing your site, keep it clean - avoid flash and scrolling. Get to the meat of what you want your visitors to know about you and your services.
